District II informational meeting set for Jan. 7
DARIEN — The town’s 15 elected Representative Town Meeting members will host an informational meeting Jan. 7 at 3 p.m. at the Darien Public Library. RTM members are looking for input as the town begins planning for its 2018-19 budget. Each District II member will give a brief update on what is happening in their committees. Tax prepayment rules
DARIEN — Due to the proposed changes in the federal tax bill, Tax Collector Kathleen Larkins has information regarding which tax payments can be legally accepted in advance (before Jan. 1) so they can be deducted under IRS rules: 2016 Grand List second installment real estate taxes due Jan. 1; 2016 Grand List second installment personal property taxes due Jan. 1; 2016 Grand List Supplemental Motor Vehicle taxes due Jan. 1. The 2016 Supplemental Motor Vehicle tax bills will be mailed Dec. 29; to accommodate prepayment, they are available at darienct.gov. Supplemental Motor Vehicle tax bills are prorated bills for vehicles registered between Oct. 2, 2016, and July 31, 2017. Payments can be made at the Tax Collector’s Office (Room 104) until Friday by 3 p.m. Payments by mail must be postmarked on or before Dec. 31 in order to be processed as a December payment. Payments may be made on the website until 11:59 p.m. Dec. 31. There is a convenience fee to pay by this method.
Elderly tax relief
DARIEN — Homeowners over 65 may be eligible for tax credits on their real estate property tax under the Circuit Breaker, Town Program or Elderly Tax Deferral programs. Applications must be filed before May 15. Homeowners who reach 65 on or before Dec. 31 and qualify within the income limits may apply at the Assessor’s Office. To be eligible, income must not exceed $52,000 for married couples or $44,300 for single persons. All income, including Social Security, must be reported. Documentation of proof, such as a copy of the 2017 Social Security 1099 form and a copy of the 2017 Income Tax Return is needed. For every Stepping Stones Museum membership purchased or renewed by Dec. 31, a free membership will be given to a family in need. The museum is partnering with Person-to-Person for the Get One, Give One membership special. The families will enjoy free admission for a year and invitations to family events. Memberships can be purchased online and range from $165 to $400 for an annual membership or $2,500 for a lifetime membership. Stepping Stones CEO Rhonda Kiest said 125 memberships have already been donated through the program. Stepping Stones is at 303 West Ave. in Norwalk. Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday to Sunday, Labor Day through Memorial Day. Admission is $15 for adults and children and $10 for seniors. Children under 1 are free.
