ID theft victim billed for nearly $1,600

A Sedgewick Avenue resident reported May 29 that someone forged his name to open an account with OfficeMax and bought two tablets, according to a police report.

The 53-year-old victim told police that he noticed a FedEx delivery stamp on his door May 23 but didn't do anything until he received a $1,595 bill from Bill Me Later May 27, according to police.

When the complainant contacted Bill Me Later, he learned the bill was for the purchase of two Samsung Galaxy Note tablets, which he said he never bought, the report states. The man later checked the FedEx delivery tracking website and found that the devices were delivered to his residence at 6:02 p.m. May 20, minutes before he arrived home that day, police said.

He contacted FedEx and learned that the package was marked to be delivered without a signature, according to the report.

Police are investigating.
