Devon Wolfe (Darien) ran her personal individual winning streak to seven girls tennis matches, highlighting the week in sports for the Green Farms Academy Dragons.
During a 5-4 win over Miss Porter’s School on Saturday, Wolfe won her fifth straight match with an 8-5 win at singles and also teamed up with Kate Flicker (Fairfield) for an 8-3 win, giving the Dragons two points on the day.
Remaining doubles wins came from Dasha Timasheva (Greenwich) and Harriett Wells (Westport), who won 8-4, and Avery York (Norwalk) and Ellen Burbank (Southport), who won 8-5.
York also won an 8-6 singles match.
For Wolfe, it was her fourth win of the week as she also earned GFA’s lone points in 6-1 losses to Greenwich Academy and St. Luke’s.
Wolfe won 6-0, 6-2 vs. the Storm and 6-1, 6-4 vs. GA.
Matt Hochberg (Fairfield) led off the game with a single, but it was the only hit the Dragons would get as they fell to King 13-0 on the road last week.
Mark Roszkowski (Westport) walked and Jackson Boolbol (Greenwich) was hit by a pitch in the game, giving GFA two more baserunners.
Later in the week, the Dragons stopped their recent scoreless streak at four games by plating a run when James Velgot (Weston) hit a sacrifice fly to score Hochberg, but the team fell short hosting Rye Country Day on Friday.
Hochberg, Roszkowski, Scott Hogan (Westport), Ian Brown (Darien), Sam Stuart (Fairifeld) and CJ Shea (Milford) all had singles for GFA.
The GFA boys golf team hosted Staples JV and Rye Country Day School at Birchwood CC on Monday. GFA defeated Staples 6-3 in their match, while RCDS defeated GFA 9-0 in the other match.
Freshman Will Lodge (Darien) led GFA's scoring followed by junior Piero Panariello (Westport). The trio of juniors Ian Epps (Darien), Giani Panariello (Westport), and freshman Will Paliotta (Westport) all shot identical scores ahead of junior Teddy Brown (Greenwich).
GFA traveled to The Ardsley Club to tee off vs Masters NY, and fell by a 5-4 score, last week, as well.
It was the closest match of the season with four of the six individual matches being decided by one stroke.
The Panariello brothers both won their matches to give GFA its first 2 points.
Despite losing the other four individual matches GFA had the lower Team Total on the day.
GFA will host Hopkins on Monday at Birchwood in their next match.
Zach Liston (Wilton) scored twice and scooped up five ground balls as the Dragons fell at Cheshire Academy.
Liam Murphy (Westport) had a goal and an assist while Charlie Benson (Darien) helped set up a goal. Max Yates (Fairfield) also scooped up six ground balls. Jack Grills (Darien) stopped five shots.
Later in the week, the Dragon put up 19 goals in a road win at South Kent on Friday.
Benson led the barrage with five goals while Liston, Murphy and Kyle Haas (Darien) all notched hat tricks, scoring three times apiece. Listen also set up four goals while Haas had two assists and Benson had one.Read Full Article
Adler Viton (Greenwich) and Will Magrone (Darien) had two goals each while Henry Mcdonald (Westport) had one goal and one assist. Connor Zaminski (Greenwich) and Magrone also had an assist each.
Yates had eight ground balls while Liston had seven. The Dragons won 17 face-offs and Grills made eight saves.
Bella Litt (Darien) scored two goals and assisted on another, but the Dragons fell to FAA power Sacred Heart. Sarah Peltier (Stamford), Ella Murphy (Darien), Sarah Logan (Darien) and Steph Wistreich (Wilton) all scored single goals for GFA. Katie Mackle (New Canaan) had five draw controls and Litt had four ground balls.
Wistreich notched nine points with four goals and five assists to lead Greens Farms Academy to a 17-9 win over Millbrook on Wednesday afternoon.
Murphy and Litt added three goals each to the winning effort while Alex Nesi (Fairfield) and Peltier tallied two goals each. Nesi also had two assists.
Mackle chipped in with five of her team’s six draw controls.
Kelly van Hoesen (Greenwich) made 16 saves.
Defense once again cost the Dragons dearly in defeat.
GFA did produce five hits against Holy Child, including a triple and single from Leah Attai (Bridgeport). Piper Dove (Norwalk), Lucy Nelson (Westport) and Mary Kessler (Westport) also had hits.
Lydia Groves (Greenwich) had GFA's only RBI.
The boys varsity tennis team won its fourth straight match at home with a 7-0 victory over The Hackley School early last week.
The Dragons started the match strong, winning the doubles point with wins by No. 1 Sean Minson (Darien)/Connor McDonald (Westport), 8-6; No. 2 Nick Simonsen (Greenwich)/Marcus Ng (Greenwich), 8-2; and No. 3 Aiden Helfant (Westport)/Will Schadt (Norwalk), 8-5.
In singles the team continued to look sharp with No. 1 McDonald, No. 2 Simonsen, No. 3 Ng and No. 4 Helfant all winning in straight sets.
Closing the match were Minson and Schadt, at fifth and sixth singles, respectively, as each battled to third set tie-breakers where they both found ways to capture a win.
The Dragons had to dig deep to get a win on the road at SUNY-Purchase (NY) defeating Rye Country Day by a score of 4-3.
The Dragons needed two third set tie-breakers from No. 1 doubles Minson/Helfant and the No. 3 doubles Jordan Liu (Stamford) and Schadt.
Minson and Helfant fought back after dropping the first set to come back and win 12-10 in the third while Liu/Schadt had to finish playing the tie-breaker with the match tied at (3-3),
With the entire team cheering them on the guys came away with a (10-5) win in the third set and secure the win.
The team also received solid performances in singles from No. 3 Ng and No. 4 Jack Ramsey (Darien), who both won in straight sets proving again to be a tough match up.
The team had its five match win streak snapped with a 0-7 loss on the road at Brunswick Friday, rebounded a decisive FAA League win over Masters on Saturday.
