For 19 years, our community has come together on National Cancer Survivor's Day to participate in our annual fundraising event, now known as Hope in Motion, Walk, Run & Ride. With each passing year, I am both humbled and astounded by the excitement, enthusiasm and energy that pulse through downtown Stamford's Columbus Park on that day.
This year, over 4,500 participants -- including many from Darien -- hundreds of volunteers and a number of generous sponsors took part in this fundraiser, which, to date, has raised more than $784,000 of its $1 million goal.
Having served as director of the Bennett Cancer Center since the fundraiser's inception in 1995, I cannot begin to explain how gratifying it is to be part of such an incredible event. One of the most exciting parts to me is the fact that all of the event's proceeds stay right at the Bennett Cancer Center and support the vital programs and services we offer to our patients and their families. It allows us to offer a multitude of supportive care options, as not every patient benefits from the same type of service. I can honestly say that I have witnessed the effects these services have on our patients, which truly provide "hope in motion" for so many.
On behalf of all of us at Stamford Hospital's Bennett Cancer Center, I would like to thank everyone involved for their efforts and endless support.
