Contractor dies after falling through roof in Stamford

UPDATE 9:12 a.m. Thursday

The man who fell through a skylight while rebuilding a warehouse roof on Wednesday afternoon has died.

Capt. Tom Barcello said the man, 59, of Stamford, whose name is not being released pending notification of his family, died at Stamford Hospital late Wednesday afternoon.

Barcello said that investigators in the department’s Bureau of Criminal Investigations are pitching in to help find relatives in foreign countries in order to notify them of the death.

Barcello said the accident is being investigated by OSHA and he is unaware of their findings.

But he could tell by looking at the accident scene that it was clear that whatever man stepped onto that was placed over the skylight could not support his weight.

“It is a tragedy that could possibly be a needless accident that could have been prevented,” Barcello said. “There was not enough support there.”

Earlier story

STAMFORD — A contractor was critically injured Wednesday afternoon after falling 30 feet while repairing the roof of a Waterside business.

Stamford Deputy Fire Chief Eric Lorenz said the man, who was estimated to be in his late 40s or early 50s, fell through a skylight of Stamford Windustrial on Sunnyside Avenue.

The man was repairing or replacing the four-foot by four-foot skylights on the roof, Lorenz said. He suffered “trauma to the head” once he fell through an uncovered skylight to the warehouse floor, and lost a significant amount of blood, Lorenz said.

The man was transported to Stamford Hospital.
