Two months after helping Darien girls lacrosse claim a state title, Wave players Mariah Matheis, Kaeleigh Morrill and Anna Moorhead won another trophy at the 25th annual Lake Placid Summit Lacrosse Tournament on Wednesday, August 6. The trio took first place in the Girls 2015-2017A division, playing for FCA, a team comprised of girls lacrosse players from all over the country under the age of 18.
FCA defeated Mass Elite Red 12-9 in the title game and went 5-0 during its tournament run.
"These girls came together for an hour practice on Sunday and came from all over the country," FCA coach Arvak Marshall told LakePlacidLax.com. "Some of them had never met before. Some of them had relationships from playing together last year. Just to see them kind of gel together over the past three days has been amazing. We had girls from literally all over the country."
FCA outscored its opposition 66 to 35, but eked through its first couple contests, as its players became more familiar with one another. Later, their improved cohesion helped the team race out to an early lead in the championship.
"We played the first two games and we won by one and two. Mass Elite is a phenomenal team and they beat the teams we beat by 10 or 12. We managed to get up on them 8-1 to in the first half. But they're a great team, and they came back. But our girls just played."
Last spring, Matheis and Morrill notched two goals apiece in the Blue Wave's state championship win over Glastonbury. Morrill's two scores were second only to captains Hollis Perticone and Dillon Schoen, each of whom finished with four goals. One round earlier, in the Class L semifinals against Cheshire, Moorhead picked up a pair of assists and Matheis recorded a hat trick.
All of them project to be key players in Darien's campaign to repeat as state champions in 2015.
