In a battle pitting the very best of Connecticut girls high school hockey, Darien (16-2) fell 3-2 at Simsbury (15-1) last night for its first loss in exactly two months.
Tied at two entering the third period, Trojan junior Sutton Wunderle scored the gamewinning goal for Simsbury with eight minutes left to go in the game. Blue Wave goalie Shannon Hall recorded seven of her 15 saves after the second intermission, as her teammates could not respond with a tying goal before the final buzzer.
Georgia Cassidy and Marissa Baker tallied scores for Darien in the first and second periods respectively, and Cassidy also collected an assist. Following Baker's score in the middle frame, the Blue Wave held a brief 2-1 lead, only to watch their hosts knot the score three minutes later. That stretch proved to be the only time Darien led all night.
Back on Dec. 13, the teams met at the Darien ice rink for an eventual 6-0 Blue Wave victory. As in their earlier meeting, Darien out-shot the Trojans last night by at least nine.
The Blue Wave racked up six penalties, including two from Ellie Bennett, who notched an assist on Cassidy's goal.
Simsbury's win was their fourteenth in a row.
Darien will return to the ice this Saturday night at Ridgefield inside the Winter Ice Garden. Puck-drop is scheduled for 8:50 p.m.
