Texas man allegedly broke taxi window

DARIEN — Police arrested a man from Richardson, Texas after he allegedly broke the window of a taxi in the parking lot of the Darien train station.

On May 10 around 5:30 p.m., Donald T. Cavett, Jr., of Vernett Street, asked a local taxi driver in the eastbound lot of the station if he “was working.” The driver told the 55-year-old Texas man he could get in the back seat, but Cavett cursed loudly and walked away. He then walked back over to the taxi. The driver rolled up the windows to avoid a confrontation, but Cavett broke the rear passenger window by pulling on it.

When officers arrived, they found Cavett standing in the parking lot with bloody hands. He was belligerent and unsteady on his feet. He was also continuously yelling profanities. He told police he had broken the window because he was angry the driver would not give him a ride.

A witness corroborated the taxi driver’s story while Post 53 responded to attend to the cuts on Cavett’s hands. Cavett refused medical attention and transportation to the hospital. He was consequently charged with third-degree criminal mischief and breach of peace. He was released after posting a $2,500 bond and was given a May 24 court date.
