Stamford man charged with DWI after caught speeding

Vineet Paruchuri, 23, of 50 Forest St., Stamford, was arrested Feb. 9 on charges of driving while intoxicated, traveling unreasonably fast, failure to obey a traffic control signal and failure to update motor vehicle license.

A Darien officer on patrol on Hoyt Street just before 6 p.m. clocked Paruchuri driving his 2002 BMW M3 at 52 mph in a 30-mph zone and attempted to conduct a traffic stop, police said. According to the report, Paruchuri sped up and drove through a red light on Hoyt Street and eventually was stopped on Hoyt Street north of Woodway Road.

Paruchuri appeared disoriented, according to police, and produced expired insurance information and a driver's license from Maryland. He told police he had been living in Stamford for more than a year and a half. An out-of-state license must be updated within 30 days of moving to Connecticut.

When asked why he sped up and away from police, Paruchuri said he was trying to pull over. according to the report.

He was administered field sobriety tests, which he failed, police said. He told police he had consumed only two beers and that he was coming from a bar in Stamford and he was either "lost or extremely confused," acvcording to the report.

He initially refused to take a Breathalyzer test when brought to headquarters, but eventually agreed, however police said he appeared to hold his breath while using the machine.

He was released on $250 bond and is scheduled to appear in court Feb. 19.
