Planning and Zoning Commission appoints replacement

DARIEN — The seat vacated in March by Susan Cameron on the Planning and Zoning Commission has now been filled.

The commission voted unanimously May 16 to approve the appointment of Elizabeth Steuert Riva, who was selected by the Republican Town Committee (RTC) from a field of three candidates and recommended to the commission.

“We had a terrific slate of candidates to choose from” RTC Chairman Brent Hayes said. “Liz had a very good understanding and balance between the needs of the town and development of the town for the future and seemed to have a real passion for the town of Darien.”

Riva attended Glen Rock High School in Glen Rock, N.J., and is a graduate of Lafayette College, where she earned a bachelor of arts in business and finance and art history. For 10 years before starting a family, Riva worked in investment banking, specifically mergers and acquisition, debt and equity and issuances and restructuring.

She has two children who attend Ox Ridge Elementary School and is been an active volunteer in town as a PTO member at Ox Ridge and as a board member of the Noroton Heights Presbyteran Church Nursery School.

Riva will serve as a temporary replacement on the commission. Because Cameron, a Republican, would have been up for re-election in November, as are the three sitting Republican commissioners. The commission requested that the RTC put forward a candidate, as opposed to selecting their own candidate and risking that the replacement would only serve a six-month term and not secure the endorsement of the RTC in November.

“As we had discussed in the past we were going to allow the RTC to make the recommendation for appointment, given that this process occurred relatively soon to the traditional candidate selection process,” Planning and Zoning Chairman John Sini explained at the Tuesday night meeting at Town Hall.
