The expanded Cape Cod at 18 Seagate Road in Darien, situated on a cul de sac at the water's edge, is an updated classic that still keeps the heart of its original charm.
Set behind a picturesque picket fence, the stately facade is behind an ample front yard -- for a house so near the water. It features clapboard siding, with grand shutters on the many sash windows and several little dormers peeking out from a steep sloping roof.
Holly Pond is in view from the doorstep, where the brick path really gives it that New England nautical feel. There's a small bird bath in the front, along with some small plantings and a range of pachysandra growing around a large dogwood tree in the front.
You step into a classic old seaside cottage, with the kind of Cape Cod-waterside sense that makes living by the water so special.
The paneling in the living room, which is immediately next to the entrance, and the horizontal paneled wainscoting add to the style of the place. The room has radiators and a fireplace.

Off this room, to the south, is a sunroom -- a kind of outdoor extension that provides access to the in-ground pool on the south lawn. The sunroom floor is brick and the ceiling is a rustic display of unfinished crossbeams. There are two separate doors from back into the house.
To the left of the main entrance is a dining room with a view out to the front. There's a small design of molding along the ceiling and a simple chandelier.
From here is the good-sized kitchen, with a family area with a vaulted ceiling, and polished granite counters. The room also has a wealth of cabinets, and mixes tiles and white-painted wood that counters nicely with the hardwood floor.
There's a separate entrance off the family area, as well as a bathroom. A door out the back leads to a separate two-car garage.
The nautical feeling of the house continues down the joining hallway, where there is a full bathroom. Opposite this is a staircase leading down to a good-sized unfinished basement, which offers a fair amount of storage space, or perhaps some play area as well.
A bedroom toward the back has wood floors, which are throughout the house.
There is a lot of room upstairs, including five bedrooms in total. The two bedrooms on the north side don't enjoy as much light as the others do. The master bedroom is the largest, with a small bathroom that has a shower only, but has been handsomely tiled. There's a nice southern view of the water from here.
The bedroom has both the southern and western views. Closet space is plentiful.
For more storage, there is a pull-down attic.
