Larissa Bailiff, independent art historian and Museum of Modern Art instructor and lecturer, will judge the 56th annual Art Show and Sale at the Darien Arts Center.
The event will take place from noon to 5 p.m. May 31 to June 7 at the DAC Weatherstone Studio.
In addition to her extensive work at the MoMA, Bailiff has lectured at the Art Institute of Chicago, the National Academy of Design, the Bruce Museum, the Brooklyn Museum and the Morgan Library.
Bailiff earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in art history from the University of California at Berkeley and a Master of Arts in art history from New York University's Institute of Fine Arts.
She has taught at Pratt Institute and the Fashion Institute of Technology, and her experience in academic and museum education includes teaching and overseeing a variety of tours, lectures, courses and other educational programs.
Her recent work at the Museum of Modern Art includes developing and teaching online courses.
"Making art gives us the opportunity to express ourselves and to touch and inspire others. I am so honored to serve as the 2014 judge of the art show and sale," Bailiff said. "To me, everyone who enters a work is a `winner' because they are sharing a part of themselves with the Darien community and enriching the town through their creative efforts."
The show and sale offers cash awards and is open to DAC students and children and adults who live or work in Darien. Nonresidents may also enter the show with a donation to the organization. Entries are welcome in a variety of media, including oil, acrylic, watercolor, drawing/pastel, mixed media/printmaking, sculpture, color photography and black and white photography.
Artists may enter up to two pieces, with an entry fee of $20 per submission for adults and $10 per piece for children. Adults submitting two pieces must designate at least one for sale. A 25 percent commission on each sale will benefit the DAC.
Artists may bring their work to the DAC Weatherstone Studio, behind Town Hall at 2 Renshaw Road, Sunday, May 25, from noon to 4 p.m. and on Tuesday, May 27, from 4 to 8 p.m. All pieces must be ready to hang with a wire on the back, or, if needed, the DAC will provide assistance with wiring at the drop-off site for a small fee. Registration is available online at darienarts.org.
The winner of best in show will be given a solo exhibit in the Town Hall in spring 2015.
Also, adult prize winners will be invited to meet art collectors, gallery owners and DAC patrons and board members during a private party featuring their work Tuesday, June 3.
The awards reception will take place from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, May 30.
