IRS scam thwarted

A Darien man almost fell victim to a scam in which he would have lost $4,000, according to police.

The victim told police that he received a call from someone claiming to be from the Internal Revenue Service and that he owed $4,000 in taxes, the report stated. The caller told the victim that he should go to a CVS or a WalMart to purchase a Green Dot MoneyPak to transfer the money.

The man, believing the call to be fake, hung up, but then received a call from what appeared to be from the Darien Police Department, according to the report. The caller told the victim that he would be arrested for failing to pay his taxes.

When the man arrived at headquarters to report the attempted scam, police contacted the caller and posed as the victim's attorney. The caller asked for the "attorney's" bar number, and when realizing the fake number couldn't be found, hung up, police said.
