GHS girls cross country team wins FCIAC West title

Defeating Wilton, Darien and Westhill on Tuesday gave the Greenwich High School girls cross country team its first title of the season — the FCIAC West Division championship.

Next week, the Cardinals hope to win the FCIAC title.

Greenwich will head into the FCIAC Championships with plenty of momentum after finishing the regular season with an impressive record of 14-1. The FCIAC West Division champion Cardinals will compete in the conference’s championship meet Oct. 18 at 2 p.m. at Waveny Park in New Canaan.

Sophomore Zoe Harris was Greenwich’s top runner Tuesday, placing second in the 2.9-mile race at Greenwich Point with a time of 19 minutes, 25.03 seconds. Senior Morgan McCormick of Wilton won the race in 17:03.42.

Harris was also Greenwich’s top finisher in the team’s victory against Fairfield Ludlowe, Ridgefield and Staples last week at Greenwich Point. Cardinals senior Emily Philippides placed third in Tuesday’s meet, crossing the finish line in 19:25.26.

Senior Hetty McMillan of GHS was fourth (19:42.82), followed by teammates Catherine Harper (freshman, 20:08.48), Caroline Webb (junior, 20:13.17) and Lauren O’Donnell (junior, 20:15.73). Senior Kate Ragone was ninth overall for Greenwich, posting a time of 20:46.75. The Cardinals placed seven runners among the top 10 finishers.

Hunter Kemp finished 16th for Greenwich in 21:35.30. Paula Perez Pelaez of Wilton placed eighth (20:31.53), while Sophie Hill from Darien was 10th (20:52.95). Greenwich was the runner-up to Ridgefield in last season’s FCIAC Championships.

On the boys side, Greenwich junior Alexander Kosyakov finished second overall in the 2.9-mile race, registering a time of 16:41.96. Darien senior Griffin Ott crossed the finish line first in 16:23.07.

Senior Georgios Karakadas had Greenwich’s next best finish, placing ninth in 17:24.85. The Cardinals boys team beat Westhill and lost to Darien and Wilton.

Alexander Bein, a sophomore, was 11th for the Cards in 17:34.17, while junior Stephen Burke placed 15th (17:48.51). Junior Akash Molekudy finished 19th for GHS in 18:06.31.
