John Dowling was arrested on charges of driving while intoxicated and failing to stop at a stop sign.

John J. Dowling, 43, of 100 Hope St., Stamford, a volunteer Darien firefighter, was arrested Aug. 11 on charges of operating under the influence and failure to obey a stop sign.

An officer on patrol saw Dowling, who was driving a 2013 Jeep Wrangler, travel through a stop sign on Ledge Road at the entrance ramp to Interstate 95 south around 1 a.m., according to the report.

Dowling appeared confused when he was pulled over and smelled of alcohol, according to the report. He told police he was coming from a picnic.

Dowling also told police that he was from Darien and that he has "been running that stop sign for over 20 years," according to the report.

"It's a stupid stop sign that shouldn't even be there," Dowling told police, according to the report.

Initially, Dowling was uncooperative with police but eventually said "just arrest me," according to the report.

Dowling was administered a breath test, which indicated his blood alcohol count was 0.1747, more than twice the legal limit of 0.08, according to police.

According to the fire marshal's office, he is a volunteer firefighter with the Darien Fire Department. Chief Victor Pensiero could not be reached for comment.

Dowling posted $250 bond and is scheduled to appear in court Aug. 21.
