Vicki French Smith, a Darien Arts Center instructor, will be leading a workshop on modern-day abstract impressionism Monday, April 21, from 6 to 9 p.m. at the DAC Art Studio.
Participants will learn what inspired the abstract impressionists and will study works by Mondrian, Rothko, Barnett Newman and William de Kooning. Color, minimalism and geometric shapes will be explored.
Smith, who is an award-winning oil painter and watercolorist, has studied at the Yard School of Art, Ducret University, Center for Visual Arts and Silvermine School of Art. Smith's work has been viewed in boutiques along the New Jersey shore, libraries, private collections and various galleries.
She is co-president of Fairfield Plein Air Painters and a member of the Rowayton Arts Center, and has served on the board of the Silvermine Arts Center.
Her latest studies of landscapes have been in the Loire Valley, Provence and Normandy, France, and Lake Como and Tuscany, Italy. She also can be seen in PBS' new series, "Landscape through Time with David Dunlop."
Since she moved to Darien 16 years ago, Smith has been teaching children, high school students and adults.
"Painting and photography have opened a new world to me," she said. "I see things through new eyes. Photography captures the memory and painting lets me relive the experiences of my travels through recreating, reinterpreting and reinventing all the places I love. My hope is to pass these rewards of inspiration on to others."
The cost is $60. Materials will be provided. To register or for information, visit www.darienarts.org or call 203-655-8683.
