Underground fires leaves thousands without power

Issues with faulty Connecticut Light & Power cables sparked an underground fire on West Avenue on July 1, leaving thousands of Darien homes in the dark.

"The cables stopped operating properly," said Mitch Gross, a spokesman for CL&P. "They burned out."

All of the underground cables were repaired last evening. According to Gross, 4,100 CL&P customers were without power for roughly two hours.

The cause of the cable issues could be "any number of reasons," Gross said, including the amount of power surging through them, the age of the wires or even the effect of chemicals used on the roads during the winter.

CL&P was notified of the fire around 6 p.m., Gross said.

Darien police closed down parts of West Avenue near Leroy Avenue while the fire was being extinguished.
